Giovanni Lucchetta is Associate Professor in Manufacturing Technologies and Production Systems at the Department of Industrial Engineering (DII) of the University of Padova since 2015. He started his academic career as Researcher in 2005 at the University of Padova. Since 2002 he has supervised more than 100 M.Sc. theses and 10 Ph.D. theses in the field of polymer processing. He has been member of the teaching staff and steering board of the PhD school in Industrial Engineering.

His main research interests focus on injection molding and micro technologies, with particular reference to micro injection molding. Some of the investigated topics are related with:

1. Modeling and characterization of the tribological effects of mold surface properties on the micro injection molding process, with the aim of manufacturing complex 3D parts and of improving both the filling flow of the polymer melt in narrow cavities and the demolding of the solidified micro parts. The activities followed two main strategies, surface generation and surface modification.

2. Replication of micro- and nano-structured surfaces for microfluidic and biomedical applications with particular reference to the replication and demolding of features with high aspect ratio.

3. Injection molding of thermoplastic materials, with particular reference to the rheological characterization of the thermoplastic polymers under process conditions, the product design for injection molding, the development of technologies for the rapid mold temperature variation and the study of their effects on the aesthetic, mechanical and morphological properties of the molded parts.

Since 2005 he has been taking part in national and international funded projects, with duties of proposal writing, person in charge for the Polymer Processing Lab at DII and scientific coordination. Here is a selection of the most relevant funded national and international projects:
- Horizon 2020 – Azioni Marie Sklodowska-Curie (H2020-MSCA), Azione Innovative Training Networks (ITN) 2020, SIMPPER_MedDev - Surface Integrity for Micro/Nano Processing of Polymers: A European Research Training Network for High-performance Medical Devices; proposal writing, scientist in charge; funding for the research unit: 523.000 €.
- EUREKA Eurostars Cut-Off 2 - Cell-Diagnostics Sample-Preparation Polymer BioMEMS (CellDiaSP); proposal writing, scientist in charge; funding for the research unit: 156.000 €.
- Ministero della Salute - Ricerca Finalizzata 2009 - Development of osteo-inductive micro and nano structured polymer surfaces for bone replacement; proposal writing, scientist in charge; funding for the research unit: 129.000 €.

Giovanni Lucchetta is author of more than 100 papers in refereed journals and international conference proceedings. He is associate member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), president of the Italian section of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), member of the Polymer Processing Society (PPS), and coordinator of the Micro Manufacturing Engineering section of the Associazione Italiana Tecnologie Manifatturiere (AITeM).
Giovanni Lucchetta is founder and CEO of the innovative startup Smart Mold s.r.l., spin-off of the University of Padua, specialized in the development of innovative treatments and surface coatings for molds for plastic materials.
